Practice Your Purpose™

Ready to get closer to answering, “What is my purpose?”

Answer 5 questions to figure out what to focus on first.

You're not looking for one perfect answer. You're collecting clues. Answer from real life, not from who you think you are supposed to be. Short answers are okay. Specific examples are even better.
Question 1 · Starting Point

Which feels closer right now?

Choose the one that best describes where you are starting today.

Choose one option before continuing.
Question 2 · Attention

What keeps pulling your attention?

Think about what you keep coming back to, even when nobody tells you to.

Need help thinking?
Think about topics, problems, people, activities, ideas, or questions you keep noticing. What do you read about, talk about, watch, make, study, or return to without being forced?
Write at least a few words before continuing.
Question 3 · Evidence and Temperament

What problems have you helped people solve in the past?

You are looking for evidence of where your usefulness has already shown up.

Need help thinking?
Think about times someone came to you for advice, encouragement, explanation, organization, teaching, fixing something, making a decision, or simply helping them through something difficult.

Imagine a friend who knows you well. Would they describe you as more analytical or guided by feelings and values? More reserved or outgoing? Calm and steady or high energy? You can be a mix, and it may change by situation. What real example might they mention? If you are unsure, write how you expect they would describe you.

Describe what a friend might say in at least one sentence before continuing.
Write at least a few words before continuing.
Question 4 · People

Who do you actually care about helping?

It is okay if the honest answer right now is yourself. Think of who matters to you, without forcing an answer about helping others.

Need help thinking?
Start where the pull is strongest right now: yourself, a person you know, or a group whose situation matters to you. You can name yourself and someone else if both are current priorities.
You can write “me” if that is where you need to start.
Question 5 · Desired Change

What do you wish were easier or better?

This can be about you, the people you named, or both. What change do you actually care about?

Need help thinking?
Think about health and habits, money and work, relationships and communication, happiness and meaning, or something else that matters to you or the people you named.
Write at least a few words before continuing.
